About Toby Mitchell

Toby Mitchell is a general and special education teacher at Ali’iolani Elementary School in Honolulu, Hawai’i and a Curriculum Associates Extraordinary Educator. In his third year of teaching, Toby has been involved in the educator field since high school. There, Toby helped mentor/coach students with disabilities in basketball and worked as an after-school care program leader, which drove his motivation to become an educator. Toby went on to Kapi’olani Community College to obtain his liberal arts degree with a concentration in education and joined Exceptional Students in Elementary Education (ESEE) at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, which helped him obtain his bachelor's in elementary education and dual licensure in general and special education. Toby teaches in the inclusion setting as a general and special education teacher for his classroom. He has created and maintained relationships with key stakeholders in the community to support events/project-based learning opportunities for the school and served on multiple committees that support after-school events, family engagement, technology, after-school tutoring, and social-emotional learning. Toby’s classroom utilizes small group instruction, station teaching, co-teaching, hands-on learning, and project-/place-based learning, with an emphasis on collaboration and goal setting to meet the needs of every student. Toby wishes to continue providing his students with the tools and learning opportunities that drive passion, motivation, and love to make a positive impact on the world, just as his teachers have done for him.
